Victorias Aladas  2019

AN EMBODIED MONUMENT OUT ON THE STREETS OF MEXICO CITY

On August 16, 2019, the streets of Mexico City and the Victoria Alada (Winged Victory) — the iconic monument known as the Angel of Independence — were draped in colors and slogans during a feminist march demanding justice for gender-based violence. However, the next day, public outrage did not focus on the thousands of women raped and murdered, nor on the impunity that perpetuates these crimes, but rather on the visual interventions that adorned the monument.

In the photographic series Victorias Aladas (Winged Victories), the four goddesses at the base of the Monument to Independence come to life, embodying the most powerful slogans born from the protest. Through them, the artwork exposes the contradiction of a country that fervently protects its monuments, but fails to protect the lives of its women. The Winged Victory, now marked with symbolic scars, makes visible the deep wounds of a nation that resists confronting its reality.

Each goddess retains the original texture of the monument's materials — marble and stones in various hues — and carries inscribed on her body phrases taken from the graffiti that covered the Winged Victory. I intervened in public space with these figures using the paste-up technique, revealing what had remained concealed behind the wall that sought to silence the protest.
